More often than I would like to admit I meet people who tell me that their medical doctor told them not to go to a chiropractor or my clients don’t want their MD knowing that they are under my care. As a chiropractor people turn to, I used to get frustrated with this until I realized that most MD’s just don’t know what chiropractic really is and what we do. While I think most medical doctors have a genuine concern for their clients, there is just so much misinformation out there and it’s true in the medical profession as well. There used to be some serious legal bad blood between chiropractors and medical doctors, but those days are long gone. There are still, however, some that subscribe to the old idea that chiropractic is bad mojo. Evidently, they have never read about the countless benefits, safety record and testimonials all over the internet.
I have a referral network with a lot of medical doctors because there are time and place for all health professionals. I have found that when there is understanding of what is happening in a chiropractor’s office, medical doctors have no problem referring and the patients love their results.
These are some of the most common things we hear about when medical doctors don’t feel chiropractic is a viable option for you.
1. Don’t let them adjust your neck. They could hurt you.
I remember the first time my neck was adjusted. It felt unnatural, the position he had me in and I was very apprehensive. But it was a life changer! So, I understand the nervousness that some will have with their neck being worked on. Still, there just isn’t cause for marking neck adjustments as taboo. There is no literature to support that this is a dangerous practice. If there was, or if chiropractic was dangerous, there would be laws prohibiting it and all 50 states wouldn’t license Doctor’s of Chiropractic. Rather, chiropractors are educated and skilled to understand when not to adjust a neck as much as the very best way to get the desired results. There are many ways to adjust the joints of your spine. Some of them are so subtle and gentle that you would ask why you were apprehensive beforehand.
2. They can’t help your condition
Who gets to decide what chiropractic can help? If you asked what you go to a chiropractor for, most would say for back and neck pain. That is true, we do help that, but that is only the beginning. If you understood that a chiropractic adjustment will reach so much farther than your pain, you will realize that it has great implications for your health and the ability to bridge the gap in other conditions. Knowing that when you have chiropractic care, you are also affecting the neurology of the body, you can start to open your mind to a lot of possibilities. That is why there are amazing reports of almost miraculous reports of chiropractic and circumstances like infants with failure to thrive, patients suffering from multiple sclerosis, kids with ADHD, people battling addiction, sleeping disorders, migraines, depression, muscular dystrophy and so much more. Is it because chiropractic is a cure all? No. It’s because chiropractic does such an amazing job of releasing the nerve system to function the way it is supposed to. When that happens, health happens. Feel free to think outside of the box on this one.
3. They aren’t real doctors.
All 50 states recognize chiropractors as doctors. Sure we don’t prescribe medicine or perform surgeries, but is that what constitutes being a doctor? You decide. Also, chiropractors go through just as rigorous training as medical doctors do. The curriculum is just as heavy as medical school, even more so in anatomy/physiology and physical therapy and chiropractic technique. They focus a ton more on pharmaceuticals, which makes sense, since they prescribe and chiropractors don’t. Real doctors? Judge the results.
4. You have to keep going for the rest of your life
It is up to you actually. You get to decide how long you participate with chiropractic. It is a lot like how exercising will keep your weight down and your figure slim. Stop doing it and you get the results you deserve. Or stop visiting your dentist for a while and see what happens to your teeth, YIKES! The way I see it is that we need to take care of our spine. A healthy spine enables us to stay active and engaged throughout our life. It also houses your nerve system, so if you have a problem with your spine, you have a problem with your nerve system. No thanks. In my office, we adjust the spine and do physical therapy to get your spine stable. Along the way, I teach you what you need to know to take care of your spine outside of my office so that you will need me less. If you can be responsible and do your part, you will only use chiropractic to keep yourself in tip top shape, not because you “have to” or “need to”.
I want to leave you with this. You are responsible for your health. The decisions you make will define the health you create. Do your research, read reviews and make the best decision for your health. If you have even the smallest of inkling or wonder if chiropractic could help you, give us a call and we can find out.
Being a chiropractor Fort Collins trusts I am confident you will see the difference it has made in millions of lives and yours could be next.
